Coping Agreement and Informed Consent
This is a psychoeducational experience. This means that you will be experiencing interplay between education, and personal processing and growth. This process may be presented as an intensive one or two day workshop, in a weekly group setting or can be done on an individual basis.
Participation in this experience can result in a number of benefits to you, including improving interpersonal relationships and resolution of the specific concerns that led you to seek attendance. During this process you may also encounter unpleasant feelings or thoughts. You may make decisions about changes you would like to make in your behaviors and/or relationships, including changes that were not originally intended.
Psychoeducation is not a substitute or alternative to individual psychotherapy. If you are currently seeing a mental health professional, it is strongly recommended that you discuss your interest in participating with your therapist prior to enrolling in a group or a workshop. This group process can be a wonderful adjunct to individual therapy, allowing you to give yourself permission and find the courage necessary to address areas that have kept you stuck. We are happy to speak with your therapist to provide information on the curriculum and answer any questions she or he may have. (We generally do not recommend doing this work on an individual basis if you are currently seeing a therapist individually. This can create confusion, and may be counterproductive, setting you back rather than moving you forward.) If you are in need of names of counselors before, during, or after the program, we will be happy to provide you with a list of providers.
By enrolling, you understand that you are agreeing to participate in a psychoeducational experience that carries with it the potential for positive benefits as well as the possibility of triggering difficult emotions and raising unexpected issues. You understand that this is not a substitute or alternative for individual/couples counseling, and that you are free to participate in your own counseling during, or after this group experience. You also agree to practice self-care while you participate in this group. If you are feeling overwhelmed, you agree to slow down, or take a break and step away. You understand that you are free to participate to whatever degree is comfortable for you, and you will not push yourself beyond that to meet any perceived expectations of yourself or others.
